Hotels in Montenegro: Podgorica : Best Western Premier Hotel Montenegro **** Country information Montenegro: Montenegro had long been a part of Yugoslavia, before it founded, a State Union with Serbia, and finally declared its independence in June 2006. The „pearl at the Adriatic Sea“ with its historic heritage and unique sceneries, is considered an insiders’ tip and enjoys increasing popularity.
The little republic Montenegro is a sparsely populated high mountain area in the Dinar Mountains. Above all, it is very well known for the big Lake Skadar and the narrow coastline with its many creeks at the Adriatic Sea. This had enticed many tourists in the sixties and seventies, who are now rediscovering the unique beauties of nature, after the end of the Balkan War. The only 176 kilometers between the most western and eastern point and the 200 kilometers from the northern to the southern end of Montenegro contain many surprises: deep gorges, impressive peaks, spectacular canyons, unique national parks, adorable bays and fantastic beaches. All this is surrounded by the crystal-clear sea and illuminated by the Mediterranean sun.
The canyon of the Tara (second largest canyon worldwide) connects two national parks: Durmitor mountains (officially declared world natural heritage by UNESCO) and Biogradska Gora. It is a paradise for all nature and white-water lovers with its high mountains and the wild river of Tara. Lake Skadar is similarly impressive, being the biggest lake on the Balkan and one of the last freshwater marshes in the Mediterranean. It awaits visitors with an amazing diversity of fishes and birds, home to the only free living pelicans in Europe.
The waters of the Montenegrin Adriatic Coast are crystal-clear, and offer an ideal diving and swimming area. Lovely seaports and little fishing villages provide further attraction. In the Bay of Kotor, the only fjord in Southern Europe, steep rock faces directly meet the green glittering Adriatic Sea. At the south-eastern end of the bay the little town of Kotor brings visitors back into medieval times and arouses enthusiasm with its dense accumulation of palaces, churches, little squares, narrow alleys and the centuries-old city wall. Budva, the oldest town at the Montenegrin coast, is situated on a little peninsula to the south. 270 days of sun per year and the wonderful sandy beaches have made the town one of the most popular beach resorts.
Podgorica Podgorica is not only the administrative capital of Montenegro but also the economic, cultural, social and educational center of the republic. The main attractions include the tenth century St. George’s Church, the Clock Tower, the Old Bridge, the Citadel and the Old Mosque. Located at the heart of the mountains of Montenegro, Podgorica is just an hour’s drive away from amazing Adriatic beaches and around the corner from great skiing and hiking regions.
